I started the season without even a sense of hope as my team entered their rebuilding years, the price you pay for a championship window wasted by a 1-2 punch of Marty Schottenheimer and Norv Turner. They lost to the worst team in the league in their first game of the season.

Then, they started doing something. All of the sudden, this was a legitimate playoff contender!

Then, they lost three games in a row, including a loss to the second worst team in the league.

Then, they went on a five game winning streak that included a primetime win against the best team in the league and, against all logical odds, made the playoffs thanks to a missed field goal and a fake punt. From there, they beat the Bengals in an absolute rout.

Then, they played 3 terrible quarters against the Broncos, but kept the score close enough to have a shot in the fourth. Two Keenan Allen touchdowns and a perfect onside kick later, they're back in it.

Then, they get pass interference called on a thrown away ball on 3rd & long. Game over.

Hope, no hope, hope, no hope, hope, no hope, hope, crushing defeat. A pattern doomed to repeat forever more.

I'm a Chargers fan. It's a terrible position to be in.

Well, STL has some pretty good sports teams, and the rams. Except for the 3-5 years of Kurt Warner and all that I don't really remember much good football.

I'm wearing my Cortland Finnegan jersey right now. But it's a Titans jersey. Because I'm a diehard Titans fan. And it sucks.

See, lets say I was a Browns fan. Every loss wouldn't hurt so bad because they lose so damn much, and aren't expected to do well, ever.

The Titans though are the best at building up your hope, and then destroying it. We started 3-1, then Locker got taken out, and Ryan "I'm the least clutch QB in the league" Fitzpatrick came in. He would keep us very close in a lot of games, only to lose the game on the last drive of the 4th quarter. I swear we lost 4 or 5 games in a row late in the season on the last drive of the game.

So we waddle around in mediocrity. 7-9 is far from good enough to make the playoffs, and far from bad enough to get a good draft pick. Feel my woe.

I know. And I blame Vince Young for all that. Bud Adams had a huge hardon for VY, and Fischer (wisely) did not. Adams won, Fischer was gone, and he took his best defensive player with him. A year later and he got our best TE too (Jared Cook).

I am ... a Cowboys fan .(ducking rocks hurled at my head) . now , I don't expect pity for being a Cowboys fan . also let me say I'm NOT one of those Cowboys fans that think they are the greatest even when they suck . the Cowboys suck . I know the Cowboys suck . I just wouldn't mind if Jerry Jones didn't exist anymore . not wishing death on anyone , just want him to not own the Cowboys anymore . maybe , he could go through a wormhole to another dimension or something .

I've had Bolts season tickets since I was in diapers. Every night I say a little prayer for Marlon McCree to die a slow, painful death. I would rather be a Browns or Lions fan. At least those kinds of teams don't get your hopes and expectations up just so they can crush them in the most infuriating way possible.

I live about 60 mins. outside Cleveland and I'm 43, so I was watching for "The Fumble", "The Drive" and the Browns moving. The last decent season I remember was '94 when they made the playoffs with Vinnie as QB and Belichick as coach. They were 11-5 that year and won a playoff game but still managed to lose to their arch-rival Steelers THREE TIMES!

I had to watch five great Cavalier teams loose playoff series, including four against the Bulls, one of which was in the finals and ended with "The Shot".

I've also had to watch two Indians World Series loses, including '97 that went to game seven when the Indians blew a 9th inning lead than went to the 11th inning before blowing the game. And the '07 AL Championship series when they were up 3-1 against the Red Sox before bblowing the series. The Red Sox went on to sweep the Rookies.

I (and every other Cleveland fan) win for most misery award.

That's the thing so many don't get when you talk about SD as a hard luck sports city! It's not that they are in a constant state of suck like the Bills or Browns, it's that they always get so close to being special and then burn out in the saddest, most painful way possible. Only the Padres could make it to the World Series only to be pitted against what might be the greatest Yankees roster ever, and only the Chargers could lose out on a shot at a 3 possession comeback in the playoffs because they failed to stop a third and long against a divisional rival.

Pretty much. If I had a nickel for every time I sat in the stands and watched us lose a home playoff game because the normally insanely reliable Nate Kaeding missed an easy field goal, I would have like 15 cents and a drinking problem.

Nate Kaeding is forever the worst great kicker of all time.

Never before has a city been more happy to see a man replaced by a noted public urinator who's actually slightly worse at the job.

I feel your pain. I got my son a Tomlinson jersey when he was 6. He was speechless and never wanted to take it off. By the time he turned 7, he could care less about it. When I asked him why he didn't like it anymore, he pretty much said he was tired of being let down by the Chargers. At least he got off before it was too late.
